Introduction

AEL was engaged to complete Phase One Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) for an energy sector client across a portfolio of approximately 60 wind turbine sites and an associated office building.

Challenge

The challenge for preparing a report that would be suitable for a variety of purposes in the future, was to efficiently and accurately integrate all of the multiple site’s background information, and site notes, into a concise, yet comprehensive CSA-standard ESA report.

AEL needed to map an efficient route between all of the sites, given the client’s tight reporting timeframe, as each property required a site visit, photographs and observational notes to be taken, and representative of the corresponding wind turbine.

Solution

Records were ordered in bulk to reduce costs and reviewed to extract site‑specific and neighbouring property information.

Given the client’s tight schedule, AEL planned an optimized inspection route to complete site visits, photographs, and observational notes for each turbine location. Field data were collected using ODK (Open Data Kit) software with geo-coordinates and compiled into a KML file, allowing photographs and observations to be referenced easily through an interactive digital map.

Results

By acting swiftly to scope the project and leveraging its technical expertise to efficiently coordinate logistics, AEL delivered the consolidated Phase One ESA report and interactive map package on a short turnaround, meeting the client’s timeline in a cost‑effective manner through bulk records requests and optimized mobilization.
