How is Chemical Remediation Accomplished in Soil?

Chemical remediation is distinguished from other forms of remediation in that it relies strictly on chemical reactions to remove contamination. Typically, these reactions work by reducing or oxidizing organic contaminants and by immobilizing or rendering inert inorganic contaminants.

Because chemical remediation reactions tend to be rapid and effective, this method of remediation is often used to achieve an initial treatment for the majority of contaminants during a site cleanup. Following the initial rapid treatment via chemical remediation, some sites also require a longer-lasting “polishing” remediation strategy such as bioremediation may be put in place to treat the remaining contaminants that are stuck in low permeability soils such as clay.

A variety of remedial compounds used for chemical remediation may be mixed or injected into the subsurface, depending on the type of contamination and site constraints. When deciding how to treat a contaminated property, many factors must be considered, including project timeline, desired outcomes, budget, and technical design items. To determine how to best treat contamination at your property, ask AEL for a Remedial Action Plan (RAP).
