Have you received results from an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) confirming that your soil or groundwater is contaminated? Or maybe you’re considering redeveloping a brownfield site? Contending with a contaminated property can be a daunting process. It is often difficult to know how to begin or what the most cost-effective and timely path is to achieve your goals. If you fit into this category, we can help.
What is an environmental Remedial Action Plan (RAP)?
AEL has a system that starts with a formalized investigation and then ranks all potentially viable solutions for treatment available, to provide you with a site-specific Remedial Action Plan (RAP). A RAP is a document which includes a review of the available remediation techniques and technologies which might be employed to achieve the client’s end goals for the property, as well as a final recommended course of action, time, and cost estimate.
A traditional RAP framework evaluates remedial approaches purely from the perspective of treating as close as possible to 100% of the contamination, but AEL’s goal when designing a RAP is always to determine the best way to mitigate risk and liability for the client while increasing property value. Because of this focus, alternative remedial approaches are also considered, such as natural attenuation, risk assessment and other risk-based approaches including containment of contaminants in addition to typical destructive remedial options such as chemical oxidation and reduction, thermal degradation, and bioremediation.
Each option is evaluated against the property’s specific characteristics and the client’s goals. Evaluation factors include items related to contaminant types and concentration but also considers key factors including the client’s budget and schedule. Depending on the project, AEL will typically consider 50+ potential options, screen them against the site characteristics and client’s goals, and generate a shortlist of 3-5 options that are top ranked. From there, AEL will provide additional pros and cons for each approach and a final recommended course of action. Following receipt of the RAP, AEL will meet with you at no extra charge to guide you through the report and proposed plan, so that you can confidently assess your options and next steps.
What is the Value of Remediation Planning?
Initiating the mitigation of contamination at your property with a RAP can be invaluable as it presents a wide range of remedial options which are available to you and clearly lays out which options are optimally aligned with your goals, budget, and timeline for the property.
