Thermal remediation is a remedial technology whereby contaminated soils are heated to a specific threshold where they are either removed, rendered inert, or destroyed. In situ treatment (i.e., treatment in place without first excavating contaminated soils) can be accomplished through a variety of means, including heating via thermal conduction, steam injection, electrical resistance, and smouldering. Ex situ treatment (i.e., excavation of contaminated soils and treatment above ground in reactors) is typically done using incinerators or smoldering.

Is thermal remediation appropriate for your site?

Thermal remediation is typically employed when other, more conventional approaches are not feasible. Typically, thermal remediation is used to clean up non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminants which are hard to treat using chemical, biological, or non-thermally enhanced phase exchange technologies because they have spread throughout a large area, into impermeable soils/bedrock, or to significant depths underground. In these scenarios, thermal remediation may become the more cost-effective alternative for site cleanup.

It is important to discuss all options with a qualified environmental professional to determine what remedial approach is best for your property. In many cases, alternative remedial options and Risk Assessment may be identified in a site-specific Remedial Action Plan (RAP) tailored to meet your goals for your property on your timeline and with your budget.
